How to Get YouTube TV Student Discount for 2022

YouTube is the second largest social media platform and search engine in the World. With over 2 billion active users and 1 billion watch hours daily, it is used more than Facebook and Netflix combined. This tutorial will guide you on how to get a student discount for YouTube TV in 2022. Also, you’ll learn how to create a family membership to lower membership costs.

What is YouTube TV?

It is a subscription live TV streaming service with 85+ channels ranging from breaking news and entertainment shows to national live sports. The content is available in English and Spanish however, it can be accessed only by households in the United States, although there is a workaround for people living outside the US that we will cover later in the article.

With the rise of smart TV devices that have the feature of connecting to the internet and the growing number of YouTube users using TV to stream, it is a logical step for the company to offer traditional TV services to its users. The app can also be accessed via smartphone, tablet and web browser.

With a YouTube TV subscription, you will get six accounts that you can share with family and friends, where three accounts can simultaneously use the service. Unlike traditional television services, there are no annoying hidden chargers, rental box fees, broadcast, installation, or local channel fees. On top of that, you get unlimited recording storage space and a personal library for every account, without limits on simultaneous recordings. The advantage of the family package is that no one can see the watch history of other members.

Unfortunately, student membership is limited only to YouTube Music and YouTube Premium. However, there is one creative way to take advantage of the family plan to lower the subscription price.

Registration and free trial

New users can give YouTube TV a try with a 7-day free trial unless there is a promotion running with an extended trial period. The regular price is $64.99 per month ($54.99/mo for the first three months). We suggest that you use your computer for a smoother sign-up process. If you are located in the US, then follow these steps:

  1. Go to tv.youtube.com and click on the “Try It Free” button
  2. On the next page, you will be asked to sign in to your Google account that you want to associate with the subscription
  3. Select and confirm your location by entering a household zip code within the US (you will be asked to confirm the address with device location permission)
  4. Add and review networks in your membership
  5. Add billing details such as an active credit card

Please keep in mind that if you don’t cancel the subscription before the trial period expires, you will be charged

Shared family membership

This creative method requires a bit of effort. Remember we mentioned that you get six account credentials for the same membership where up to three accounts can use the service at the same time? To lower the membership cost, you can find five more students living close to your location and split the bill. The regular monthly rate divided among six users is only $10.83.

Once you open an account, you will be a “family manager” with permission to add or remove members to form a family group.

  1. To start, sign in to the YouTube TV account that you opened in the previous step
  2. Click on Settings / Family sharing and click on “Set Up”
  3. Next, click on “Create a Google family group”
  4. Agree to the terms and privacy policy and click on the “Next” button
  5. Enter the Google email addresses of people who you want to invite. You can edit this later. Members will receive an invitation email with a link to join your membership

Note that G-suit users and people living outside the US are not eligible for YouTube TV. Also, they must be over 13 of age and can not be a part of other YouTube TV family memberships.

System requirements

YouTube TV can be streamed on the latest versions of Chrome, Safari and Mozilla Firefox on any computer with an internet connection.

Streaming is available on most smart TV devices with an internet connection and through Chromecast, AirPlay for Apple TV and Google Smart Displays. You can find the full list of the supported devices here.

The app is compatible with most Android L devices (smartphones and tablets). To check if your device is supported, simply head over to Google Play and search for YouTube TV, if you can’t click on the “Download” button, then your device is not supported. To avoid any glitches, update your device to the latest Android version.

As for Apple devices, iPhones and iPad can access the app from App Store and run it without problems if the software version is iOS 12 or later. Mac users can access the app from the latest version of Safari.

How to stream YouTube TV outside the US?

Like many streaming services, YouTube geo-blocks users outside the United States. With the help of a Virtual Private Network (VPN), you can access the service without any limitations.

VPN is a service that changes your computer’s IP address to a location of your choice. Generally, it’s wise to access the web through a VPN as it protects your privacy and internet connection.

  1. Sign up with a VPN provider. We recommend NordVPN
  2. Install and log in to the VPN software
  3. Select the United States location
  4. Now that you have a US IP address open a new YouTube TV account. However, you must have a US address and billing details
  5. To access the service through a smart TV device, you’ll first have to download the VPN app of your provider and then open the YouTube TV app

Using VPN to stream is 100% legal. Although the default YouTube playback resolution is 1080p, there might be some lags and buffering, especially if you stream at 4K. However, if you choose the right VPN provider, these issues are less likely to happen.
